And according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 33 percent of U.S. fourth graders are proficient in reading.&nbsp;We need to help students with dyslexia,&nbsp; and we need to start early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-amplify-font-family mb-small landing font-amplify\">Dyslexia can\u2019t be \u201ccured,\u201d but it can be identified and successfully addressed, starting as early as kindergarten. Students with dyslexia&nbsp;<strong>do<\/strong>&nbsp;have the potential to read at grade level when they have access to early intervention, targeted supports, and a structured curriculum. A University of Washington study found that&nbsp;<strong>only eight weeks<\/strong>&nbsp;of specialized instruction strengthened students\u2019 neural circuitry\u2014and improved reading performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-amplify-blocks-buttons is-horizontal justify-content-start\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/dyslexiaida.org\/how-widespread-is-dyslexia\/\" class=\"wp-block-amplify-blocks-button btn btn-primary btn-oval btn-medium  btn-type-link mb-small\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion-group\" data-allow-multiple-open=\"true\">\n<div class=\"accordion-wrapper\" data-title=\"Reading trajectories\" data-expanded=\"false\"><div class=\"accordion__inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-amplify-font-family mb-small landing font-amplify\">Students establish reading trajectories early. Without intervention, readers on a low trajectory tend to stay on that trajectory or fall further behind. Being on grade level by the third grade is widely considered the most important predictor of high school graduation and college and career readiness. (<a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=EJ640703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Good, Guba, &amp; Kaminski, 2001<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0022219411414010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Morgan, Farkas, &amp; Wu, 2011<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1727544\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shaywitz, Escobar, Shaywitz, Fletcher, &amp; Makuch, 1992<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion-wrapper\" data-title=\"Early intervention\" data-expanded=\"false\"><div class=\"accordion__inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-amplify-font-family mb-small landing font-amplify\">The later the onset of intervention, the lower the odds that struggling readers will become proficient readers (<a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=EJ603366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Torgesen, 2000<\/a>). Response to intervention (RTI) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) are built on research in prevention and early intervention and designed to help educators implement strong literacy systems. The screening and progress-monitoring data they provide enable educators to design instruction and intervention that prevent difficulties and close skill gaps for students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion-wrapper\" data-title=\"Intensive intervention\" data-expanded=\"false\"><div class=\"accordion__inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-amplify-font-family mb-small landing font-amplify\">Without early, intensive intervention, struggling readers won\u2019t catch up to their average-performing peers. According to the National Center on Improving Literacy, 49 states have passed laws addressing dyslexia in public schools. Through Decoding Dyslexia\u2019s 50 state chapters, tireless parent leaders work to share dyslexia resources, raise awareness, remediate and support students with dyslexia, inform policy makers on best practices to identify at-risk students, advocate for the drafting and passage of state policies, and empower families to support equity for all children.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion-wrapper\" data-title=\"International Dyslexia Association\" data-expanded=\"false\"><div class=\"accordion__inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-amplify-font-family mb-small landing font-amplify\">The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) is a non-profit education and advocacy organization devoted to issues surrounding dyslexia. Serving individuals with dyslexia, their families, and professionals in the field, the IDA provides information about dyslexia on its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dyslexiaida.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>, publishes a peer-reviewed scientific journal called Annals of Dyslexia, and provides referral services to individuals and professionals who use the federal legislative systems to advocate for individuals with dyslexia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion-wrapper\" data-title=\"University of Oregon Center on Teaching and Learning\" data-expanded=\"false\"><div class=\"accordion__inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-amplify-font-family mb-small landing font-amplify\">The University of Oregon Center on Teaching and Learning\u2014a UO College of Education research and outreach center that develops educational interventions and assessment tools\u2014developed DIBELS&nbsp;(Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills). DIBELS is a research-backed instrument for evaluating reading in kindergarten through eighth grade classrooms. In developing DIBELS 8th Edition (University of Oregon, 2018), the Center on Teaching and Learning made significant efforts to ensure that the measures meet state-level dyslexia screening requirements and help maximize testing efficiencies for schools.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion-wrapper\" data-title=\"National Center on Improving Literacy\" data-expanded=\"false\"><div class=\"accordion__inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-amplify-font-family mb-small landing font-amplify\">The National Center on Improving Literacy (NCIL) is a partnership among literacy experts, university researchers, and technical assistance providers, with funding from the United States Department of Education.
